The original painting depicts the aircraft having just taken off from RAF Membury in Wiltshire, as the USAAF troop carriers of 80th Troop Carrier Squadron, 436th Troop Carrier Group prepare for their first active service mission, the D-Day airlift in early June 1944. Featuring the original individual signatures of thirteen Bomber Command veterans, who all served on bombers during the Second World War. "Gathering Storm" Wins Beales Trophy
My latest oil painting "Gathering Storm" won the Beales Trophy at the Solent Aviation Art Group's annual exhibition at Ferneham Hall, Fareham, held over the last weekend of November 2011. The competition entires were judged by two senior figures from the aviation world.
Now released for sale "Gathering Storm" depicts BAe Harrier FA.2's of 801 Squadron landing aboard HMS Illustrious, whilst guarded by a Type 23 Frigate, HMS Marlborough. This painting was the subject of a 'Painting Blog' where you can see how it all came together.
